Oliveros was herself a great composer, yet because composing was considered to be a male endeavour, she pointed out that women who wrote music were often regarded as "female" composers, a distinction that separated their work from the mainstream and devalued it. In her view, the way for women to overcome their second-class status was through greater recognition of their achievements and potential.
